Press Release 2013

A total of 200 delegates from 29 countries converged on Rome this month to attend the 3rd EURETINA Winter Meeting, which took place in the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria on the 1st & 2nd of February.  The title of the Winter Meeting was ‘Innovation in Management of Retinal Disease’, a topic which was broken down and analysed over four sub-sessions across two half days.  An audience of scientists and ophthalmologists interested in cutting edge research listened to the findings and unpublished data relating to Imaging, Artificial Vision & Electrical Stimulation of the Eye, Regeneration and Degeneration of the Retina and, lastly, Inflammation in Retinal Disease, presented by a total of 28 esteemed speakers.

Furthermore the meeting saw over 50 poster submissions, which were available for delegates to view over the two days, while poster presenters were on hand to discuss their work.   Posters were reviewed by the EURETINA Programme Committee and awards were presented on Saturday afternoon to the three highest scoring applicants.  First prize of €3000 went to Dr Sylvie Julien of Tuebingen, who presented a poster on Immunohistochemical investigation of intravitreally injected ranibizumab and aflibercept in the retina and choroid of the primate eye’.  Second prize of €2000 was awarded for the poster entitled Combination of ranibizumab and navigated retinal photocoagulation in diabetic macular edema, compared to ranibizumab mono-therapy - twelve month results’, by Dr Marcus Kernt of Munich.  Finally 3rd prize of €1000 went to Dr Ilya Mochkin of Nuernberg Germany who presented data on ‘Potential risks of anti VEGF therapy in DME - correlations between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and inflammatory biomarkers’.

Feedback compiled onsite from the Delegate Surveys suggested full satisfaction on the part of delegates and speakers and has firmly secured the EURETINA Winter Meeting its place on the annual ophthalmic calendar of events.  Dates and location of the 4th EURETINA Winter Meeting will be announced shortly.

As one of the added membership benefits to the Society, EURETINA members will be able to access video footage of the scientific sessions from the 3rd Winter Meeting in the coming weeks through EURETINA on Demand.
