Remembering Prof. Dr. Jan van Meurs

It is with great sadness that Euretina marks the passing of our former President, Prof. Dr. Jan van Meurs. A vitreoretinal surgeon, clinician, and teacher of exceptional skill, and a scientist of real depth, he made a lasting contribution to the understanding and treatment of retinal disease, particularly in the field of vitreoretinal surgery. His work helped shape modern practice, and his influence can be seen in the thinking and techniques of colleagues across Europe and beyond.

Yet it is not only for his scientific achievements that Jan will be remembered. He was, above all, a kind and generous presence within the Euretina community – a consummate gentleman whose warmth, humility, and quiet grace left a deep impression on everyone he met. He had a rare ability to make others feel valued, to listen with care, and to offer guidance without ego. For many, his mentorship and friendship were as important as his clinical insight.

Jan was, quite simply, one of the warmest souls in our field. His absence will be felt profoundly, not just in Euretina, but across the wider retinal community. We send our heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Jeanette, and their children. We will miss him greatly, and we remain deeply grateful for the legacy he leaves behind – in Euretina, in the wider field, and in the many lives he touched.
